Radio – cinema of the mind

For over 100 years, radio as a broadcasting medium has been an integral part of social communication. What began as an experiment by radio hobbyists has developed into an electronic mass medium with a diverse, worldwide radio landscape. It’s the history of a medium in the interplay between technical developments and societal framework conditions.

Guide
In the course of its 100-year history as a communication medium, radio has undergone a technological transformation and a process of democratisation: from a propaganda tool of state broadcasting corporations to private stations and “independent local radio”. Today, the Internet, social media and podcast formats as transmission and storage platforms enable the constant availability of audio content for radio producers, journalists and listeners.

The tour of the exhibition 100 Years of Radio in Austria conveys the history of classic radio, showcases technical and transformation processes in society and explores current and future developments of the medium of radio: How does/did radio work? Who makes/made radio and who listens/listened to it? Will there still be radio in the future?
